| The Continence of Scipio , by Nicolas Poussin, (1594 – 1665), was engraved by Francis Legat (1755 – 1809), for the Houghton Gallery Series collection. Francis Legat was born in Scotland and studied in Edinburgh under Alexander Runciman (1736 – 1785). Legat moved to London and worked many publishers and was appointed engraver to the Prince of Wales toward 1800. The Continence of Scipio , was published by the eminent English publisher, John Boydell (1719 – 1804), January 1, 1784, in Cheapside London. The The Continence of Scipio engraving has a vellum covering and measures, 19.50 inches H X 26.75 inches W, with the image size of, 18.75 inches H X 23.75 inches W.
